The Windlass Mechanism - from the Dockyards to Human Movement

A mechanism for increasing efficiency and reducing effort in the human body as a whole. An AiM Perspective. I put this booklet together for people to gauge a better understanding of the Windlass Mechanism. A mechanism that is arguably misunderstood or used (quoted) for the wrong reasons. The windlass mechanism is widely used for neutralising a foot, building an orthotic when it could be being used to understand human movement at large, it’s role in the gait cycle is critical and the function of it helps to better understand many pathologies and problems that people suffer from on a daily basis. I put this book together to give people access to a far greater understanding of the role that the big toe plays in gait, a role first noticed in 1954 by Hicks who coined the term “The Windlass Mechanism” - a mechanism for increasing efficiency and reducing effort in the human body as a whole. When we roll that into AiM speak and begin to understand it, not as a 2D model but in it’s three dimensional glory, it becomes a game changer for human movement.

You will be able to understand:

the role of the Windlass Mechanism in gait, and the three types of Windlass Mechanism

The 2D to 3D upgrade in appreciation of the mechanism as originally understood

The big toes role in the gait cycle

How to assess your windlass mechanism

How it has the potential to give us insight into whole body problems

Exercises to work on and improve your windlass mechanism

It’s all here in my digital book “The Windlass Mechanism: from the Dockyards to Human Movement - an AiM Perspective”
